Aussie Noise: An Australian Modern Rock Playlist

Share this:

I have been utterly obsessed with modern Australian rock music ever since I first discovered Tame Impala’s album Innerspeaker back in 2010. So much so, if you look at my Spotify account, about 80% of it consists entirely of Aussie bands.

From my all time favourites Psychedelic P*rn Crumpets who can turn the place into a mosh pit on the opening note, the swelling psychedelia of Pond that you can get lost in for days, to Sticky Finger’s reggae beats that make you crave a Sunshine Coast beach, Australian rock music is as diverse as the landscape of its origin.

One of the things I love the most about Australian modern rock is that the sound is often so careless. Sometimes this manifests itself in a feisty, two fingers up, ‘I don’t give a f*ck’ kind of way. Other times there’s an utterly laid back vibe – an attitude that the Aussies are especially well known for. Somehow their music just doesn’t sound as uptight as British or American rock.

Lyrically, I find Aussie bands are really fun and test the boundaries creatively. Especially when they incorporate some humorous elements about their ‘culture’. Listen to Violent Soho’s ‘Covered in Chrome’ and Dune Rat’s ‘6 Pack’ and I’m sure you’ll get what I mean!

If you’re preparing for a trip to the land ‘down under’, want to discover some awesome Aussie bands or simply want to transport yourself to a thriving rock scene (that I personally think beats London’s), turn this up loud and get involved.

Make sure you follow the playlist on Spotify to pin it to your sidebar.

Happy listening!

  4. I’ve been randomly obsessed with Australian rock bands for years, too! There’s so much good stuff coming out of there. In fact when I was getting my Music Industry degree, I did a project on Australian rock music for one of my classes. Great picks, I love DZ Deathrays, Tame Impala, King Gizzard, Gang of Youths, Total Control, and Wolfmother too. And I just saw Stonefield play at the Bootleg in Los Angeles last year when I lived there, they were fun! I didn’t realize Courtney Barnett was Australian, she’s so good. Another new find for me was The Ruminaters; it’s funny because they moved to LA right after I discovered them when searching for Aussie bands! Los Tones are another crazy psychedelic group from AUS, you’d probably like them.

  5. Psychedelic Porn Crumpets hahahaha. That’s almost as good as King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. I’ve been amazed how many Australian bands I’ve got into recently – more on the pop punk scale of rock though! Bands like With Confidence, Stand Atlantic etc. So much good music coming out of Australia recently!
